SCOTTISH KENNEL CLUB May 18th 2024

Thank you to the Officers & Committee of SKC for inviting me to judge at your show and thanks too, to all the exhibitors for entering your lovely Beardies under me. It is over 4 years since I last judged and I was interested to see how the breed was faring. I was pleased to find some really nice exhibits that were well constructed and moved like I feel a Beardie should.  Having said that, once again I did find a lot of upright shoulders, more particularly in the dogs and also some incorrectly shaped ribs, either too barrelled or too flat and also some that were too short. Strength of muzzle seem to have improved over the years with less narrow jaws and catching canines. Pigment too seems generally to have improved. Most dogs were well presented with correct coats and not excessively long, though I did spot some very obvious trimming around feet and hocks – not attractive. A few Beardies found the noisy hall, and the distant roar of jet engines, a bit overwhelming but most took it all in their stride. Finally I would like to thank my steward Carolyn, who, working alone, kept everything running smoothly and efficiently – I couldn’t have asked for better.

MPD (No Entries)

PD (2, 1 abs) 1. Whelan & Young’s Blumaci U Son of the King at Corimist (imp Fra), Impressive, well grown, dark slate youngster just coming up to a year. I loved his outline on the stand and he excelled in head proportions with a lovely broad, flat skull, and soft expression to complete the picture. This dog has excellent shoulders, with good length of upper arm and rear angulation to match. His ribs are well sprung and of good depth and length. He moves easily around the ring and really covers the ground. As would be expected for his age he still has some maturing in body to do but I seriously considered him for higher honours. BP and delighted to hear he won the puppy group. One whose career I will watch with interest.

JD (5, 1) 1. Blumaci U Son of the King at Corimist (imp Fra); 2. Gibb & Dungavell’s Debbeacol Devil in Disguise at Pirateer, nice outline standing, lovely head and expression from dark eyes. Not quite the shoulder angulation of 1 but balances his rear and he moved out with a pleasing action; 3. Busby’s Beardoni Dudley Do Right, smaller dark slate and another with a lovely head and dark eyes. His shoulder angulation is good but I felt he was just dropping off a little at the croup and not quite so positive in the rear or as balanced as 2 on the move today.

GD (3, 1) 1. Bramley & Moore’s Coalacre Do the Hokey Cokey, well proportioned young pale slate dog with a lovely head, and expression, decent shoulder angulation with good length of upper arm and good rear angulation. Well shaped ribs and nice harsh coat to complete the picture. Moved out freely with a positive, balanced action; 2. Cox’s Braesnobel Salt ‘n Pepper for Coirantee, nice young dog with a good head and expression, good harsh coat coming. Not quite the layback of shoulder as 1 or as positive on the move today.

PGD (3, 0) 1. Moir’s Winaria Wellington JW, nice head and expression and lovely outline on the stand, length of back coming from well shaped ribs. He has both good shoulder and rear angulation and comes into his own on the move when he really covers the ground. A good harsh coat developing completes the picture; 2. Ayrton’s Aoibh Drummer Boy JW, a very nice dog of good type. I liked his head and kind expression and he is well proportioned overall. I would just like a touch more layback of shoulder and just preferred the scope of 1 on the move; 3. Ryans Dychix Invictus for Razkal, nice head and eye, lovely harsh dark coat, reasonable angulation fore and aft but just preferred 1 & 2 coming and going

LD (7, 0) 1. Brooks & Grundy’s Fraglestone Family Affair, loved this boys overall proportions, he is a well built dog in good, harsh coat, but still with that touch of elegance I look for. Very pleasing head with broad flat skull and soft expression. Well shaped ribs of good depth and length. Correct shoulder angulation and rear angulation to match, he moved out well in all directions with a pleasing, balanced action. A very nice dog and pleased to award him the RCC against some quality opposition; 2. Nolan’s Talraz Badge of Honour JW, another lovely dog who definitely shares many of the qualities of his sire. He is of a finer build than 1 but still masculine, though I feel he still needs a little more time to mature fully in body. His angulation is good both fore and aft and he covers the ground well in all directions; 3. Skinner’s Tamjenta Bendelacreme, handsome blue dog who excels in head and overall proportions. Good harsh coat, beautifully presented. I just preferred the shoulder angulation of 1 and 2 but a nice positive mover.

OD (8, 0) 1. Jay’s Ch Farmarens Drums of Spring at Talraz (imp Swe) JW, this boy took my eye as soon as he entered the ring. Not overdone in any way he is an elegant, yet masculine dog. Good head proportions and a lovely outline on the stand with good shoulder and rear angulation he floated around the ring with an easy, balanced action. I had no hesitation in awarding him the CC, in the challenge for BOB he slightly lost his enthusiasm and had to make way for the bitch; 2. Strzelczyk’s Fr, Bel, Lux & Czech Ch Corimist the Sun King, a lovely dog I have admired from the ringside. More strongly made than 1 but not overdone in any way he has a super outline, with length of back coming from well shaped ribs and good shoulder angulation with rear to match. Not quite so precise as 1 on the move today, I feel this dog would really benefit from a big outside ring but he nonetheless pushed 1 all the way. In the challenge he was a bit distracted by his sons presence unfortunately; 3. Baker & Van de Hoef’s Malandex Most Xquisit, smaller, plainly marked boy but still masculine with a lovely head and expression. Good front and rear angulation and moved out positively as one would expect from his construction.

VD (6, 0) 1. Waldron’s Ch Snowmead Shades of Gray JW, this blue boy has done a lot of winning and it is easy to see why. Handsome dog with excellent head proportions and good length of back with well shaped ribs of good length. He has really good front and rear angulation and covers the ground easily on the move; 2 Robertson’s Arranbrae Laird of Quothquan JW, finer boy than 1 all through, nice head and lovely dark eyes, nice outline standing and good harsh coat. Good shoulder and rear angulation just preferred the front extension of 1; 3. Gibb’s Ch Snikkles Bluebeard at Pirateer JW ShCM ShCEx VW, nice upstanding blue dog, good type and overall proportions, just preferred the shoulder angulation of 1 & 2

SBD (2, 1) 1. Axford’s Bramblemead Bollinger Boy, nice slate boy who is a little finer all through but will hopefully fill out with maturity. Lovely expression and nice coat well presented. Decent shoulder angulation with good length of upper arm, he moved with a nice balanced action.

GCD (1, 0) 1. Bramblemead Bollinger Boy.

MPB (1, 0 abs) 1. Leckenby’s Kiltondale Kisses of Fire at Briaryburn, Just 6 months brown baby and as one might expect very raw and leggy at the moment. She has a lovely head and good strength of muzzle for her age and a nice neck onto well angulated shoulders. She is a bit ‘bum high’ at the moment and loose on the move but she moved out with confidence and took the noisy hall in her stride. She has plenty of time on her side.

PB (3,0) 1. Johnston’s Corimist Glimmer of Rye, lovely outline standing, good head and expression, nicely angulated shoulders and rear angulation to balance, initially a little unsettled she nonetheless went on to move out well around the ring. A nice puppy; 2. Dobrowolski’s Highglade Moon Child at Trileada, another nice puppy, pleasing head and expression and another with good angles front and rear leading to a nice balanced action. On the stand I just preferred the outline of 1 but it was a close decision and I will watch these two puppies with interest; 3. Kiltondale Kisses of Fire at Briaryburn

JB (5,1) A mixture of types in this class. 1. Baker & Van de Hoef’s Malandex Xpression of Love, nicely proportioned bitch with pleasing head and expression. In good coat and well presented. Correct shoulder and rear angulation enabling her to move out well around the ring; 2. Axford’s Bramblemead Sparkling Lady, this bitch has a lovely outline but could be stronger in head and body – hopefully she will fill out with maturity. She comes into her own, and won her place here, on the move, particularly in profile, where her lovely scopy action ate up the ground; 3. Waldron & Gray’s Une Histoire D’ amour De Chester with Snowmead (imp Fra), more strongly made girl but of nice size and proportions. She has a lovely head and eye and good front and rear angulation. I just preferred the freedom of movement of 1 & 2 today but a nice youngster.

GB (13, 3) This was a strong class with some close decisions. 1. Burgon’s Corimist Caissa at Lyngem JW, liked this girl for size and overall proportions. Good head and expression, nice harsh coat developing and presented well. Nicely angulated fore and aft and the more she moved the better she went; 2. Glasgow’s Basnikova Muza Od Plzenskeho Lotra at Gallus (imp Cze), close up to 1 this plain brown girl is another of good proportions. Well angulated front and rear and moved out well, just a little untidier going today than 1 which cost her 1st place; 3. May’s Sengalas Indiana Charm, another I loved for size and proportions, excellent head, sweet expression and nicely angulated front and rear. On the move I just thought 1 & 2 moved with a little more extension but a very nice bitch.

PGB (6, 0) 1. Jay’s Matamata Lorien Lady at Talraz, slate of lovely size and type, good head and nice eye, ribs of good shape, depth and length. Well laid shoulders and rear angulation to match, she came into her own on the move when she went round the ring with a scopy, balanced action. She is not a natural show off but she is a lovely bitch who is sympathetically handled to get the best out of her and I seriously considered her for higher honours; 2. Price & Horne’s Winaria Winter Solstice for Mobuff JW, a very nice dark slate bitch of lovely type that reminded me of Beardies past. I loved her proportions overall and she was nicely constructed throughout. Not quite the scope of 1 nonetheless she moved out positively in this class to earn her place; 3. Kuz’s Kiltondale Memphis Belle at Strufingill, another of lovely ‘old fashioned’ type, well presented and in good coat. Moved well but not quite the angulation of 1 & 2 and not quite so positive behind.

LB (13, 4) 1. Edwards’ Kelham Like Dreams Do at Roxilyn JW, loved this feminine dark slate bitch for type and proportions, she excels in head with lovely expression from dark eyes. Just coming up to 3 years, she needs a fraction more finish to her coat but it is harsh and was beautifully presented. She has good length of neck onto well laid shoulders with correct length of upper arm and good rear angulation to balance. Well shaped ribs of good depth and length, she strode out round the ring, with a lovely balanced action and was true in all directions. In the challenge she just kept going and I was delighted to award her, her second CC and BOB; 2. Skinners Dychix the Rag Nymph, another lovely bitch of the type I admire, plainly marked blue girl, so feminine but with enough substance, in beautiful coat, well presented. Another with excellent head proportions and lovely eyes to tone with coat. She too was well ribbed and had good front and rear angulation. She moved out beautifully round the ring, I just thought 1 had a fraction more extension, but it was very close. Delighted to award her the RCC; 3. Johnston’s Corimist Fashion Star, completed a trio of lovely girls, feminine, with lovely head and sweet expression who excelled in outline. Good angulation enabled her to move round the ring well from all directions, and she moved better the more she went. Just felt 1 & 2 were a little more precise in movement.

OB (6, 2) 1. Whelan & Young’s Ch Corimist Glamour Girl, this girl was my BPB last time I judged and has certainly fulfilled her early promise. A taller girl, she is still feminine and not heavy in any way. She excels in head proportions and has a lovely soft expression. Good length of neck onto well laid shoulders, correct ribbing and rear angulation to balance front. Beautifully presented coat completes the picture. She covered the ground with reach and, balance to earn her place against some good competition. In the challenge she didn’t quite perform as well and missed out on higher honours but she is a lovely girl and a worthy Ch; 2. Betts’ Ch Pipadene Xtraa Hint of Chilli JW, feminine bitch of nice type and size, beautiful head, lovely expression and in good coat and condition. She too had good angulation and moved out well. Just thought 1 had a little more extension today, but it was a close decision; 3. Glasgow’s Ch Malandex Xpats Gem at Gallus JW, well made girl of good proportions, well balanced head and nice expression. Good length of neck onto well angulated shoulders, good ribbing and nicely angulated rear. She moved well with a pleasing balanced and scopy action, just preferred the precision of 1 & 2 going away today, but another worthy Ch.

VB (6, 0) 1. Ch Bowden’s Subessan Blaze of Fire VW, feminine slate bitch of lovely type.  Good head with sweet expression from dark eyes and nice length of neck onto well laid shoulders with good rear angulation to match. In lovely coat and condition she was so in tune with her handler and covered the ground well with such a light, balanced action, a worthy Ch and I had no hesitation in awarding her BV; 2. Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island, nice unexaggerated brown girl, well proportioned overall, good head with pleasing eye colour. Good angles fore and aft and moved out freely, just not quite as strong in topline as 1; 3. Salter’s Irisaddition Effie Trinket JW, another nice bitch with a lovely head and of good proportions overall. Another with good angulation and moved out well but just not as tidy on the move as 1 & 2 today.

SBB (2, 0) 1. Bramblemead Sparkling Lady; 2. Jenkinson’s Irisaddition Victorious with Ellishar, a nice bitch, pleasing head proportions and presented in good coat and condition and nice angulation. Moved well but not quite the scope of 1.

GCB (5, 0) 1. Bramblemead Sparkling Lady; 2. Kneeshaw’s Adjucet Stand by Me, honest brown girl with nothing exaggerated. Nice head and good harsh coat. Pleasing angulation and sympathetically handled to get the best out her she moved out well in this class to earn her place; 3. Richards Wildan’s Dark Sky at Elemarkanother unexaggerated girl of lovely type, moved well but just not quite the scope of 1& 2 in profile.
