Italian Greyhound Critique
Thank you to the Officers and Committee of Leeds Championship for their kind invitation to judge Italian Greyhounds at their show. We had a good sized, even ring and the sun shone for the majority of the judging, with the exception of a couple of moments when the wind picked up slightly. Thank you also to all of the exhibitors who entered under me and to my stewards for their help.
Some of the classes were difficult, with a huge variation in outlines and movement. The Italian Greyhound is defined by its elegance, its graceful curves and its characteristic ‘high-stepping, free action’ to quote the Breed Standard. Flat toplines, exaggerated weak rear angulation and coarseness are not desirable attributes for the breed. Most exhibits were presented in good condition although more muscle-tone on some dogs would be preferable, the breed is a small sighthound after all.
Puppy Dog (3,0a)
1st DOHERTY Littlebriton I Dont Care. Fawn and white, 8 months who has a lot of appeal. He is up to size and I would prefer a more refined head and neater ears, but he has a lot of quality and pushed hard for BP. Masculine yet retains the all-important elegance of body, with no heaviness whatsoever. Lovely length of neck, well placed and leading into an excellent front assembly. Good substance of bone, beautiful supple coat and perfect muscle-tone. Shapely outline with tuck-up in underline and arch over the loin. Balanced rear which he uses well on the move, being true both out and back and displaying typical breed movement in profile. Only a baby and a little exuberant at times but full of promise. BPD.
2nd: WESTON Crystaldrift Neo Lythix. 10 month blue of heavier build to 1. Pleasing head, well proportioned and with good earset. Would prefer more length of neck. Sloping shoulders and good return of upper arm, straight forelegs. Topline can flatten and I would like more length and arch of loin to give greater overall balance. Well bent stifle, not exaggerated and hocks let down. Moved out well with sufficient lift in front and sound fore and aft moving away and back.
3rd: GREENFIELD & GREENFIELD Laborghini Sting Avec Karcasam Junior Dog (5,0a)
1st: THORNE Boccalupo Lucky Luciano (Can Imp). Eye-catching red and white 14 month old. Handsome head, with good strength of foreface, dark eye and excellent ears which he used well. Well arched neck leading into good shoulder and forelegs set well under his body. Another with desirable substance of bone. Lovely depth of chest and good length of rib. Well balanced rear with muscled thigh. On the move, his topline tended to hunch which just affected the freedom of his front action but he uses his rear well with plenty of drive, and true coming and coming. Beautifully shown and presented in excellent condition, one of the best coats of the day.
2nd: MACK Alura Prince To Minitopo (IMP USA). Black and white, just 12 months old of lovely size. Pleasing head although I would prefer a larger eye and more strength of foreface. Well placed ears. Sufficient arch of neck although a dash more length would be preferable. Good front with sloping shoulders and desired return of upper arm. He presents a balanced picture most of the time, occasionally falling away in topline. Well proportioned rear and correct feet.
Preferred his profile and front action on the move over the class winner although he did carry his tail a little high. True coming and going. Just lacked the composure and performance of 1.
3rd: 1475 DOHERTY, Miss J E Littlebriton I Dont Care Post Graduate Dog – no entries
Limit Dog (1,0a)
1st: WILLCOCK Newill Haymaker. Fawn, nearly 14 months in age. This young dog excels in breed type, combined with elegance, masculinity and soundness, and having so many of the qualities that are asked for in the standard. Undeniably male with masculine headpiece, balanced in proportions and correct eye. Good neck, in proportion to his body, leading into long, sloping shoulders. Straight forelegs, not turning in or out. Deep brisket and ribs well sprung. To be ultra picky, I would like more length of ribcage to give greater overall balance in the body. Strong loin, well arched. Excellent rear construction, good muscle-tone and no exaggerated angles. Supple, fine coat. Moved out with desired lift in front with a freedom of action through the shoulder which secured him the CC today. Accurate action both in profile and coming and going, albeit lacking a little bit of enthusiasm. Worthy winner of the DCC.
Open Dog (2,0a)
1st: BRUNDTLAND Miwell Alex Mcqueen. Two and half year old black. Refined head, correct rose-shaped ears and typical expression. A little stuffy in neck for me. Pleasing shoulder and front assembly. Sufficient curves in topline and underline and preferred his shape over second. Good bend of stifle, hocks well let down and tail correctly set. Moved out well, sound out and back and displaying adequate lift in front. Handler just needs to get his pace right as occasionally moved too fast.
2nd: BIRD Tamiskene Hamilton. Fawn and white, two years old. Unfortunately, exhibitor was unable to stay for the critique with apologies received from the owner. This young dog was just not happy on the move today and unable to get into his stride.
Veteran Dog (1,0a)
1st: LISTER Ch Florita Tallento. Fawn and white, nearly ten years in age. This veteran looks fantastic, putting on the most composed and collected performance of the day. Handsome in head, lovely dark eye with good ears. Well arched neck leading into an excellent shoulder and front assembly. Deep chest, well spung ribs and curves in the right places both in topline and underline. Well balanced rear, correct feet. Moved out accurately fore and aft, holding his shape in profile with good lift in front and drive from behind. Pushed the youngsters hard in the challenge, winning the RDCC and later BVIB and Toy Veteran Group 4.
Special Beginners Dog/Bitch (4,0a)
This class was not the easiest to judge. Some dogs were atypical, lacking breed type and characteristics while others were not cooperative on the move or stack.
1st: READ Littlebriton Galway Girl. Fawn and white, litter sister to BPD. This young puppy was the easy winner of this class. Feminine throughout, well proportioned head, just a little heavy in ears. Lovely for size, she has elegance and good bone. Lovely neck, good shoulder, correct feet and well sprung pasterns. Good length of body, occasionally she could stand a little hunched in topline but gentle curve in underline. Shown in super condition, with fine supple coat and
excellent body weight. Moved out well for one so young, showing lift and reach in front. Could strengthen in rear movement going away but this should come with age. Best Special Beginners in Breed.
2nd: BAILEY Loutony Dances With Wolves. Blue, nearly twelve months old. This young dog was difficult to assess but her more typical breed features secured her this placement. Feminine head, refined throughout. Pleasing length and arch of neck. A little upright in shoulder and upper arm. When she relaxed on the stack, she had sufficient arch over the loin and good overall length of body and proportions. A little long in second thigh. Needs more practice in the ring to build up her confidence. She was not cooperative on the move, but I saw sufficient amounts of her movement to see some lift in front and soundness in action.
3rd: WILSON Plendlethrine Run Baby Run At Atikan Puppy Bitch (5,0a)
1st: DAVIS & MACK Marchwind Nefartari At Jemalsheva (Imp USA). Red and white, nearly nine months, very smart puppy who presents a finished outline for one so young. Ultra feminine throughout. Well proportioned head with dark eye and correct rose shaped ears. Sufficient length of neck, would maybe prefer her neck less highly set into her shoulder. Sloping shoulders, good return of upper arm and straight forelegs. Very shapely girl with pleasing topline and tuck up in underline. Balanced rear construction with good bend of stifle and length of thigh and second thigh. Presents an eye-catching picture on the move, holding her shape and good lift in front. Needs to strengthen in the rear going away but she is still young, and handler just needs to settle her on the out and back to help her movement here. BPIB and later shortlisted in the Toy Puppy Group.
2nd: READ Littlebriton Galway Girl. Winner of Special Beginners.
3rd: HENSHALL Gemolli A Million Dreams
Junior Bitch (2,0a)
These two young bitches are very different in type but each offers qualities to admire.
1st: WILLCOCK Newill Swift Wind. Fawn, nearly fourteen months old. This bitch epitomises breed type – she is exquisite. Ideally, I would like more of her but her balance and shape are textbook. Beautiful headpiece, feminine, good strength of foreface and delightful expression. Lovely length of neck, correctly set into her sloping shoulders. A little ten to two in front. Superb underline, good length of rib and the desired arch over the loin. Good rear angulation which she uses on the move, moving out with drive from behind and excellent lift in front. Presents a wonderful picture both on the stand and move. Lost out to more mature bitches today but undoubtedly worthy of top honours.
2nd: KNIGHT Aelaro It's All About Me. Black and white, just turning a year old. A larger build to 1 and overall longer in cast. Feminine head, with dark eye and correct ears. Pleasing length of neck and good shoulder and return of upper arm, you need to look beyond her markings with a break in her colouring right along her front assembly. Good spring of rib, correct topline with curvy arch over her loin. Super coat and condition. Correctly set tail set, would prefer a dash less length in second thigh. On the move, she moves out accurately coming and going both fore and aft, just a little exuberant in front profile action.
Post Graduate Bitch (2,0a)
1st: BAILEY Loweroak Escape The Gossip. 21 month old, blue bitch. Pleasing head of refined lines but would prefer more length in foreface. Well arched neck leading into good shoulder and front assembly. Deep brisket and shapely underline. On the stand, her topline tended to fall away. Well angulated rear and shown in good condition with supple skin and coat. She was not too cooperative on the move when coming back towards me but when she relaxed, I was able to assess her movement – she moved out true behind and has sufficient lift in profile.
2nd: PENDLEBURY Pendlethrine Lady Dior. Two and half year old, cream bitch. Feminine head, although a little broad across the skull. Pleasing shoulder and return of upper arm. Broad across the chest. She lacks the desired shape for the breed, being flat throughout her topline. Would also prefer to see her carrying less condition. She moved out with assurance and composure, and was accurate in her foot placement.
Limit Bitch (2,0a)
1st: GUYTON Ansanda Winter Bird. Three year old red bitch who is correct in so many ways. Balanced head, ultra feminine and well proportioned with a dark eye and lovely expression. Well set neck of good length and with desired arch. Excellent shoulder placement and straight forelegs. Lovely outline which she holds both on the stack and move, with a gentle arch over her loin. Presents a very balanced picture, her handler just needs to show her to her full potential to really showcase her qualities. Unexaggerated throughout with correct rear angulation. Super coat and condition. On the move, she is true coming and going with accurate profile movement combining good lift in front and propulsion in the rear. The OB winner edged it in the challenge with more freedom of action through the shoulder, but this bitch was a deserving RCC winner today.
2nd: PENDLEBURY Ruby Beyond Price. Two year old fawn bitch. Feminine head with dark eye and rose shaped ears. Pleasing length of neck leading into sloping shoulders. Would prefer more infill in front. She is longer cast in comparison to the winner and flatter in topline. Ribs well sprung. Supple skin and coat. A little long in second thigh. On the move, she displayed pleasing profile action with sufficient lift in front. Not as strong or accurate when moving out and back compared to winner.
Open Bitch (3,0a)
1st: LISTER Ch Revillo Campanella. Fawn, two years old. The epitome of elegance and so full of breed type. Beautiful head, balanced throughout with dark eyes, a melting expression and correct earset. Super length of neck, gracefully arched into a good shoulder and front assembly. She is so curvy with a lovely length of rib, arched loin and the desired shape in both top and underline. Balanced rear construction, excellent muscle-tone and supple, fine coat. On the move, she really displayed the breed’s distinctive action with lift and reach in front and drive from behind. True out and back and so composed throughout, keeping her shape on the move. Delighted to award her the BCC and when it came to the BOB challenge, her classical outline and shape secured her the BOB over the quality DCC winner.
2nd: KNIGHT Aelaro At Last. Four year old, black and white. Of heavier build and different type to the winner but a quality bitch with much to like about her. Feminine head with good length and strength of foreface, refined throughout with correct rose shaped ears. Would prefer a fraction more length of neck. Good sloping shoulders, lovely return of upper arm and straight
forelegs. She is quite deep in chest but she has a good spring of rib, curvy underline and shapely in topline too. Good bend of stifle and hocks well let down, correct tailset. On the move, she held her shape moving with plenty of propulsion in the rear and good lift in front, and accurate foot placement out and back.
3rd: MELLIS Miwell Mary Quant By Lamoye JW Veteran Bitch (1,0a)
1st: MELLIS My Funny Valentine At Lamoye (Imp) It. 7 year old black bitch who was well presented. Well balanced head, no coarseness whatsoever with dark eye and good ears. Pleasing neck leading into a good shoulder with her front legs set correctly under her body. Balanced throughout with good length to body and loin. A little straight in rear angulation. On the move, her outline did tend to flatten but she displayed sufficient lift and typical profile action.
