Firstly I would like to thank the Society for the invitation to judge today and for the wonderful new ring set up, which was perfect.
Thank you to my stewards, Hilary and Marcia, who were so efficient and I am very grateful for the help they gave me to keep things running smoothly.
My final thanks are to the exhibitors, not only for entering but for accepting my decisions in such a sporting manner. It really felt like a good atmosphere.
Overall, I think the breed is starting to improve with regards to length and return of upper arms. This fault is so easy to see on a whippet, not just in movement, but in how that front is supported.
I think there are two areas that we as breeders and judges should be aware of, so that we can ensure things do not deteriorate.
The first area is tails. Our breed standard says so little about tails so its easy to overlook the importance of this. It simply says with regards to action , it should be a delicate curve, not higher than the back. What we are now seeing more and more is tails that are curled, whether in a circle or almost pig tailed to the side, or starting to creep higher on the move. Of course, we can forgive this to some extent in a puppy, but it should never be forgiven as the dog gets older. If we do, its a slippery slope and something we won’t get back from. I’m sure we have all seen dogs that have a super outline on the move, but then the tail in the air just spoils it.
Secondly, but more importantly is movement. The side gait action in a whippet should be a profile of a long, easy stride with low front action. The dog should not be picking up. We should also see those hind legs coming right under the body propelling it forward. In essence, you are looking for those balanced triangles as the dog goes. However, I feel that we have become so fixated on achieving this, some breeders have forgotten all about movement being *true coming and going”. My biggest disappointment today was the amount of dogs, that were close behind. This was not because they were converging. It didn’t matter what speed they went at, they were still close. It is for todays breeders to look to improve this and for judges to penalise when necessary because if we continue to overlook this, things will only get worse.
Having said that, I had a super entry of quality examples of the breed and I can honestly say we have a lot of dogs with an exciting future ahead of them.
Class 361 MPD (7 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1001 ELLIS, Mr T K Citycroft Jules Rimet for Railfield - Striking brindle/white male, has a pleasing outline with a good tuck up, he presented a balanced picture when he relaxed, forechest was filled but not prominent, ideal shoulder placement, slight arch over the loin which he held particularly well on the move and it was this that gave him the edge in the class. Away and back he was sound but he did show some reluctance to co-operate with his owner. However, he did enough to gain the win.
2nd: 1068 TYSON, Mr Craig & TYSON, Mrs Louise & TYSON, Miss STARCEYLON DANCING MASTER - Not the overall body and substance of the class winner but nonetheless, this is a really promising young man. Black/white, with a gleaming coat, he does catch your eye, particularly his side gait footfall. When stood he presents a curvy outline but he just loses his topline slightly on the move. Nothing to be too concerned with as he will improve as he matures. Coming towards you he is super, just needs to strengthen behind.

1st: 1064 POSTLETHWAITE, Mr William Starceylon New King - One of the nicest young blues I have seen for some time. Skull was long and lean, his neck flowed so well into his shoulders, masculine without being heavy so he still looked elegant, away and back he has good footfall and he holds his shape really well in profile. My only criticism of this super pup was that I would prefer him to be slightly stronger in pastern. I thought he would be my best puppy dog but in the challenge he looked as if he was favouring a leg which is such a shame.
2nd: 982 BOWERS, Miss Sharon Ann Cobyco Catch a Glance at Saraquele - a promising fawn boy who was giving his owner a bit of challenge, particularly on the move. Masculine head but I would prefer more underjaw. Long clean neck, good fill in front, clean tuck up and ideal flat muscle for his age. He didn’t help himself when stacked as he was pushing forward so looks unbalanced but that will improve as he ages.

1st: 1082 WINTER, Mr Laurence & YEATES, Miss Debra & MORLAND ZORADEN MASERATI - Fawn boy who is probably a bit heavier in shoulder than I would like but he was by far the soundest in the class on the move. Lean skull with slight stop to muzzle, muscular neck and a good lay of shoulder. Really good spring to his ribcage and rise over his loin. Muscle on the hindquarters was a touch more than I would want to see as it makes him look heavier than he actually is. On the move, he is good away and back and balanced in his side gait, holding his shape well.
2nd: 984 BREW, Miss Anna BOXING HELENA'S VICTOR ENA (Imp Bel) - Brindle who was overall of more body and substance than the class winner. Theres a lot to like about this boy but I just preferred the croup and outline of 1. He has a good head which you have to get up close to appreciate as his markings are deceptive. Clean neck, good shoulders, deep brisket and a flowing underline. Shown in super condition. Took a while to settle on the move but when he did he was sound enough.

1st: 1075 WHEELER, Mr Rob Ch Ranveli Diki Diki - A striking brindle dog who is so eye catching. I’ve watched this dog so many times in the ring and was looking forward to going over him. I was not at all disappointed. I was immediately drawn to his elegant and curvy outline. Your hands flow over him, his clean shoulders, well sprung ribcage, powerful loin, broad thighs with flat muscle and well let down hocks. His movement away and back is good but it is the side profile where he excels. He has that free easy movement that we aim for, forelegs staying low over the ground and the hindquarters powering him without any exaggeration. A really good example of the breed and my Dog CC today.
2nd: 997 DILLON, Miss M & BAILEY, Miss L Dreamjet float my boat at runforest JW - Fawn parti which is another you have to go over to appreciate. Shown in super condition with enough muscle coverage. Loved his head shape and he has such a kind gentle eye, yet still looks alert. Well laid shoulder and slight spring to the pasterns. Clean tuck up and strong loin. In particular, he has super hindquarters, ideal turn to his stifle, nothing overdone, enough second thigh and well let down hocks. Very sound on the move and lost the class simply because the kennel type of the winner was more to my taste.

1st: 1057 SMITH, Miss Francesca & GODDARD-SMITH, Miss Charlo Edenwhip Love At First Sight for Neviwesh - Brindle/white dog who is masculine but not too strong in head or body. I would prefer him to be slightly more refined through his shoulder with less muscle and not such a prominent forechest. He was good for bone throughout, short coupled, good turn of stifle and a super tuck up for a male. Very sound on the move and covered the ground effortlessly.
2nd: 981 BOOTH, Miss Victoria & RAYNER, Miss RUBY ROGANSROCK VITALQUEST - Brindle/white that was overall a bigger dog than the winner. Good infill to his forechest but could have a slightly better return to his upper arm. Deep brisket, clean underline and flowing arch over his loin. I preferred the turn of stifle of 1 which was more moderate. Moved well enough but gained his place on his overall elegance and shape.

1st: 1037 PARKES, Mrs Karen & MCKAY, Mrs ELSA Crosscop Born To Move For Jubrancy - Brindle that was somewhat lighter in bone than I prefer on a male but he won the class for his overall breed type and he was the best mover in the class. Beautiful head and expression, long muscular neck, good lay of shoulder but could benefit from a slightly longer upper arm, so that his front legs can support the body better. Well sprung ribs and moderately angulated behind. Moved well enough away and back and was sound in his side gait.
2nd: 1083 WINUP, Mrs Dorothy Mary & PAIPALA, Mrs Lindsay Rogansrock Harvest moon - Brindle boy that was heavier throughout than the winner. Another with a good head and expression, muscular in neck, but again he could also benefit from more length to the upper arm. Deep brisket and a super topline. He would possibly look better with slightly less muscle, particularly on his shoulders. Moved ok but his front construction affected his reach.

1st: 996 DILLON, Miss M & BAILEY, Miss L Stonefox ice pick Willie at runforest JW - This dog surprised me as I will admit hes not a dog that’s ever commanded my attention. But today he changed that, as he was on top form. This was a good example of a dog having his day. Red brindle with no exaggerations. Masculine but pleasing head, clean neck and a good shoulder, although he does have a tendency to lean so spoils the look of his front construction. Being critical, I would like more spring to the pasterns and a touch more return of upper arm. Excellent ribcage and tuck up, strong loin with a rise and moderate turn to his stifle with a good width to the second thigh. I admired his overall kennel type. Today he won the RCC for his shape on the move, his super side profile and ground coverage, and he was clean away and back.
2nd: 979 BELL, Miss J Aarminias Change The Game At Drumburn - This is a brindle male that ringside I have always liked, stronger in bone and heavier through the body than the class winner but he is still elegant and curvy and not at all overdone. Really liked his head and expression, long muscular neck, well laid shoulders and good return to his upper arm, clean tuck up, muscular loin and a really good shape to his hindquarters. Ideally I would prefer a touch more length of leg to give a more balanced picture. On the move he was true away and back but just lacked a bit of drive in profile and I preferred the front action of the winner which was longer and lower.

Such a difficult class to judge. 5 beautiful males, all good examples of the breed and top winners in their own right, but all 5 of a different kennel type. They could all change places on another day so I was really being critical when I judged this class
1st: 1080 WINKLEY-BALMER, Mr James & POOLE, Mr G Edenwhip Can I Be Him - A really elegant fawn, not the biggest or heaviest of males but masculine nonetheless. He won the class for his overall balance and soundness. Really beautiful head, his neck just flows into his shoulders which are laid back and he has a good return of upper arm. Good frontfill but no prominence to his sternum, clean tuck up, broad in back with an ideal rise, good turn to his stifle and well let down hocks. So balanced and full of quality and moved out well with a beautiful low and long front action, with absolutely no picking up. Lost out in the challenge as he didn’t stand so well and looked tucked up, which was such a disappointment.
2nd: 1004 FRYER, Mr Mark & FRYER, Mrs Kathryn Ch Collooney Eye Love To Tease at Stonefox - Brindle male who is eye catching and impressive when stacked. Quite a stallion of a dog and a very different kennel type to the winner. Although he isn’t quite as elegant, he is certainly still full of quality. Super head and expression, his underline flows and he has a good turn of stifle. Away and back he is sound enough and he covers ground well in profile, but does not quite have the front action of the winner. Another dog I feel you have to go over to truly appreciate.

1st: 1028 JOHNSTON, Mrs H Ch Danluke Lord Of The Dance JW - Well what can I say about this impressive veteran that hasn’t already been said. Beautiful fawn brindle who has an air of quality about him that makes his so hard to overlook. He absolutely defies his age. There is nothing overdone about him. He’s expression is alert (particularly when looking for his winners sausage!) but just melting. Well filled forechest, deep brisket, good tuck up and a good turn of stifle. I know because of age he is perhaps slightly dropping his topline but I will say one thing, he was one of the best movers I saw all day! He is light and athletic and true away and back. His overall condition was a sheer credit to his owner. My notes say he was one I would happily take home. BVIB and delighted to see him win BVIS.
2nd: 1059 TROUTON, Mrs Biddy Runnel Run For Fun - Well this veteran was unlucky to meet the class winner who was on top form. What a really super moving dog this fawn boy is. Another dog that was turned out in super condition, really pleasing outline and holding his topline so well. Well laid shoulder, balanced hindquarters and the best of heads. Just preferred the overall picture of the winner.

1st: 1060 TROUTON, Mrs Biddy Citycroft Grace Kelly Of Runnel JW - Heading this large class was the most elegant and beautiful fawn and white girl. She stood out in the class for me not only because of her soundness in all directions, but she is so balanced. Her head is exquisite with her dark eye and pigment. Good shoulder placement and return of upper arm, well sprung ribs, good width to her second thigh and well let down hocks. Presented and handled to perfection to get the absolute best of her.
2nd: 994 DICKINSON, Miss Lynda Ann Collooney Queen Aslaug - Another beautiful, elegant fawn girl. What a super mover she is, my only criticism of her on the move was that I would like a slightly better head carriage. She holds her topline well as she goes, her tail stays low, she has reach and drive and is so sympathetically handled. She’s probably easy to miss in a class as she isn’t flashy, but she’s an honest bitch with a lot of good qualities.

1st: 1079 WHITEHEAD, Mrs Jo & SMITH, Miss Rachel Creme Anglaise's Lady Bridgerton of Citycroft (IMP ND) - Fawn and white girl who is spot on for her age. Took her a short while to settle as she seems to be a pup with character, but when she does you can appreciate her correct movement, which is spot on in all directions. Nothing overdone on this girl, she has the best of shoulders, good front fill, well-muscled back with a good topline, a clear tuck up and a good turn of stifle. Her overall balance and outline, particularly on the move, are what won her the class. Not the most mature of all the pups I judged today, but for me she was the pup that had the best breed type and was full of quality. BPIB
2nd: 1067 TYSON, Mr Craig & TYSON, Mrs Louise & TYSON, Miss STARCEYLON REGINA DI QUADRI - A really raw brindle of just 6 months but so much to like about her. Very sympathetically handled by her young owner, as she clearly wasn’t settled, but I think this pup shows so much promise. She is elegant and curvy, good spring to her ribcage already, has a good rise over her loin which she maintains on the move. She excels in her side gait but is currently a bit weak behind, but hopefully this will improve as she matures. I’m sure there will be much fun to be had in the future.

1st: 1009 HALLIDAY, Mrs A L & CROXFORD, Mr W S Aarminias French Fancy at Whittimere - Black and white that I’ve liked from the ringside and she didn’t disappoint me at all. She is ideally proportioned and balanced front and rear. Pleasing head and expression, well laid shoulder and an excellent return of upper arm, deep brisket, definite tuck up and a good turn of stifle. When she settles she can move so well, but can at times move somewhat exuberantly in front. She also carried her tail a bit higher than I would like, but I think this will settle as she matures.
2nd: 1002 FINCH, Mrs F M Zenobia Love Actually - Fawn girl who was unlucky to meet the winner. She exudes elegance and grace and has no exaggerations. A really beautiful head and expression, long and muscular neck, super shoulder placement and a muscular loin. Shown in tip top condition. She is good in her side gait but just needs to strengthen up behind when going away. A promising young lady.

1st: 1023 HOWGATE, Mr M & HULL, Ms Y Palmik Truth About Love JW - Up until I judged the Open bitch class, this girl was going to be my ticket winner. This fawn is so full of elegance, her expression is melting yet still alert, really good front construction with her well laid shoulder, good return of upper arm, plenty of front fill, her brisket is deep and she has the desired definite tuck up. Her hind angulation matches perfectly with her front and she has well let down hocks. I just loved her overall outline when she was stacked and she is so sound in all directions on the move.
2nd: 1030 JOHNSTON, Mrs Helen & JOHNSTON, Mr Luke & WILSON, Danluke Don't I Know It - Brindle girl who is heavier throughout than the winner but she has some super qualities. She was a bit unsettled on the table initially but once she relaxed you could appreciate her shape and balance. super spring of rib, good tuck up, a really good lay of shoulder and good spring to the pasterns. On the move she was very sound, she really covers the ground well and has such powerful drive from her hindquarters.

1st: 1078 WHITEHEAD, Mrs Jo & SMITH, Miss Rachel Citycroft Seattle - A truly beautiful fawn girl, she won this class for her overall outline, balance and her side gait action, which is so correct. She has a head and expression which draw you in with that dark eye and pigment. Well laid shoulders and a strong loin with an ideal topline. Another with no exaggerations. Balanced front and rear, ideal pasterns and feet, flowing underline leading to a good turn of stifle. On the move she is so correct, particularly in her side profile, showing no sign of lift, just a beautiful daisy cutting action. I’m sure her day will come.
2nd: 1076 WHEELER, Mr Rob Ranveli Glowtini - Another eye catcher from this kennel, but unfortunately she wasn’t really enjoying her day. She has a super outline, but being picky, I would like a touch less length to the loin and a slightly less prominent sternum. One of the most appealing heads I saw today, she has an excellent lay of shoulder and her rear angulation is ideal. She holds her shape well when she does settle. So patiently handled today.

Good length of neck, clean shoulders, good ribbing and tuck up, enough angulation behind and elegant throughout. When she moves she never loses her topline at all. Shown in ideal condition for muscle and body coverage.
2nd: 1013 HEAD, Mrs Molly Demerlay Ebony Eyes - Quite a different type to the class winner, as she is far scopier. Still quite a raw baby, this brindle was rather tense so she tended to carry her head very high which spoils her shoulders. Enough length through her body and loin and more turn of stifle than 1, but she is still elegant and curvy.

She not only has a super shape and topline when stacked but she maintains it so well on the move.Shown in tip top condition, muscle, coat and skin. Pleasing head and a keen expression. Her neck flows into her shoulder and she has one of the best shoulders to go over. Her return of upper arm means her front is well supported. She has a good tuck up and a good expanse of second thigh which was missing in several exhibits today. So full of breed type.
2nd: 1056 SMITH, Miss Francesca & GODDARD-SMITH, Miss Charlo Afterglow Princess Royale For Neviwesh - Brindle girl who is of differing kennel type to the class winner. She is built on a slightly smaller frame than the class winner, but she is perfectly balanced and is full of quality. 1st: 1022 HOWGATE, Mr M & HULL, Ms Y Palmik Chasing Rainbows JW - This was my biggest surprise of the day. When you hear people say you have to go over a dog to appreciate it, this is a prime example. This fawn beauty isn’t flashy, she isn’t the biggest of movers, but she is just so correct. From the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail, she is just beautiful. Her head is long and lean, has a slight stop, perfect rose shaped ears, elegantly arched neck leading into her well laid shoulders. Those shoulders are not at all heavy but are still muscular, elbows are tucked in, broad back and powerful loin and a well developed second thigh. Your hands flow over her beautiful gleaming coat and her well conditioned body. On the move she is balanced, has low front action and uses her hindquarters to full advantage. A super example of the breed. I was delighted to hear this was her crowning CC with BOB.
2nd: 1007 GRISOLI, Ms L Loroli Romancing The Stone - Another super example, albeit of a different kennel type. This brindle girl is built on a slightly bigger frame than 1 but she still has flowing lines and is full of curves. Two veteran girls the breed should be proud of and two of the best movers away and back that I saw today.
