Judging: Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit), Hound Group

PETIT BASSET GRIFFON    VENDEEN DARLINGTON  16TH SEPTEMBER 2023 JUDGE VIVIEN  PHILLIPS

I last judged the  Petits in 2017  at the BGV Club show.  At the time, I was quite concerned about the quality of younger exhibits and   thereby the future of the breed… Today I was pleasantly surprised with  the quality of several  younger PBGVs and , in fact my CCs   both came from the Junior classes. Coats have improved on the whole. I have always stated when speaking at a seminar or mentoring that the BGV should have “the coat of a goat”  and as Griffon means rough or wiry coat this is something I think is essential . A long curly coat on body and legs, may look cute but would be a disadvantage to the hound when hunting in the snow or wet. There are still hounds too long in body, although ribbing  in the main was oK.   Temperaments on the whole were  very good and no bad bites.

Veteran Dog  (2 Entries) 1st:  Reid’s  Ch Vilauddens Magnificent Mile (Imp NLD) I awarded this dog the reserve CC as a youngster. Now 7 years old, he is a good type and size with  correct head and dark eyes,  well placed leathers.. good front assembly with tight feet. He is  a little heavy in front so a tad down on his pasterns but he moves very well  in hind movement and in side gait.. Best Veteran. 2nd: Eaton’s  Linphil Kili another 7 year old with a good  head and eye. Correct leathers.  Good front and feet.  Longer in body than the winner and ribbing could extend further back. 

Puppy Dog  (2 Entries) Abs: 0 1st: Bartley’s  Erylan Poseidon De La Mer   8 month Nice youngster, dark eye .  Correct leathers..  Muzzle  just short enough.  Shoulders correct and sufficient forechest. Good feet.   A longer body than I  like but well ribbed and moved   OK,using his strong  hindquarters  well. In good coat. 2nd:  Reid’s  Maudaxi Fonzie Foxtrot This 11 month  youngster did not want to help his handler and was hard to assess on the table.   He has a good head  if a bit feminine, Dark eye and correct leathers.  I found him rather “gangly” and would prefer more substance throughout. That will come hopefully. Moved Ok when he settled with correct tail carriage.  A very good coat of excellent  “Griffon” texture.

Junior Dog. ( 1 entry)  1st   Robertson’s  Soletrader Happy as Larry. What a super young dog. 17 months.  Lovely for size and type. Good head, eye and leathers. Correct front and tight feet. Well ribbed and  in excellent coat. He has correct length of body   and topline is good.  Strong muscled hindquarters with correct angulation . A nice thick tail  carried correctly.  Very good on the move. CC and I understand this was his 3rd.

 Post Graduate Dog (1 Entries) Abs: 0 1st Fairhurst’s  Valefell Savannah Journey  This  21 month old  dog is of good height  if a little long in  body  . His head  and muzzle are correct  . I would prefer a darker eye. Leathers are of correct length.  He has strong hindquarters  which he used well, but did not retain his topline  when stood  although ribbing went back sufficiently.. He has a good coat. 

Limit Dog. (2 Entries) Abs: 0  1st: Brown’s  Erylan Chaud Comme Hades   4 year old.He is up to size with  a pleasing head and  dark eye . Well placed leathers.. Forechest  and front correct  . . Tight feet. Good topline and well angled hind quarters. He has  a correct coat.  Moved well though a bit close behind. . 2nd:  Townsend ‘s Afterglow Curtain Call Avec Roxastan 3 year  old with a nice head. Could be tighter in elbow. Excellent coat.  Correct length of leathers and a good   thick tail which is not too long, carried well  on the move.  Moved round the ring with drive though looser coming towards me.   

Open Dog. (6 Entries) Abs: 0 1st: Cadmore , Hayes and Moore;s Ch / Am Ch M and  M'S Stellar Mayhem and Madness.   This 2 year old  male is correct for size and type. Lovely head  with a short muzzle, and good leathers.  Nice neck and shoulders and sufficient forechest. Good topline and body length.   Tight feet. Excellent coat and condition . Strong correctly angulated hindquarters . Moved very well  carrying his tail  correctly. He is  a worthy Champion who had to be happy with the Res. CC today , but close up in the challenge. 2nd: Bartley’s  Erylan Zeus Roi Des Dieux ShCEx.  Heavier 5 year old  male. I liked  his  head., with a .correct muzzle and  length of leathers. In excellent coat.  Well ribbed and strong hindquarters..Moved very well.  Used his tail well on the move. 3rd: Lewin’s  Ch Soletrader Special Effect for Vynesbrook JW

Veteran Bitch.  (1 Entries) Abs: 0  McEwan’si Ch & Ir Ch Maudaxi Coco Chewnel from Marunnel Ir J This sweet lady is nearly 11 years old and a credit to her owner.  Nice type with a lovely head. Teeth and nails needed a little attention but she is a super example of a veteran . She is a good size with correct shoulders and feet. Sufficient  brisket and good topline. Moved extremely well, especially for her age. Carried her tail correctly

Puppy Bitch.  (5 Entries) Abs: 0 1st: Blance’s  Soletrader Tina Turner. What a total sweetheart.. just 6 months. Super type with a lovely head, dark eye and correct length of leathers. Good shoulders and sufficiently strong in forechest for her age. Well ribbed and strong in topline. Correct   hind angulation . Lovely thick tail of correct length.. Excellent coat. Moved well, a little loose still behind but she is a real baby. Must have a bright future… Best Puppy and delighted to see her shortlisted in the puppy group later. 2nd: Taylor’s  Erylan Pois de Sentier for Nottorg. This bitch is bigger but she is  already  9 months old. Good head and eye and correct leathers.  Well ribbed with a steady topline. Well angulated in hindquarters…  Moved well.. Good coat.3rd:  Reid’s  Maudaxi Joanie Loves Chacha

Junior Bitch  (1 Entries) Abs: 0 1st: Cooper & Cadmore’s  Soletrader Missy Elliott. 17 months old. A   lovely type bitch,of correct size .  She has a super head and eye..  Well turned leathers of correct length. Good neck and tight feet.   Shoulders and forechest excellent. Ribbing goes well back .  Well set on  thick tail of correct  length.. Super coat.  Moved extremely well, as she should as she is so well made.. CC and BOB.  She shares the same stud as my Dog CC and their mothers are sisters.

 Post Graduate Bitch  (2 Entries) Abs: 0  1st: 2421 Moulding’s Nykarth  Touch of Class.  when this bitch finally decided to move she was hoovering the ground a bit. She is a nice type with a sweet head and correct length  to ears.  Her shoulders are OK with tight feet.. Well ribbed and she has a good length of body and her coat is of correct  texture.. When she moved without sitting  down  she was  quite sound. 2nd: Fairhurst’s  Valefell Moonlight Tides . This bitch could have a   darker eye and better pigment. She has correct foreface  and leathers..  Longer caste than the winner.  She is well ribbed  with a good topline and hindquarters are correctly  angulated.. Moved   very well.

Limit Bitch.   (3 Entries) Abs: 0 1st Reids Fox’s's Nightmare Lara Fabian at Maudaxi(Imp Rus) Lovely type bitch with one of  the best “Griffon” coats of the day. Sweet head and   lovely dark eye.. Well placed  leathers.  Good neck  shoulders and  feet. Her  ribbing  could go a tad further back but she has a good body  length and shape and strong hindquarters used well on the move. Correct tail length and carriage.   Challenged hard for the Reserve CC,  2nd:   Moulding’s  Nykarth Perfect Moment  5 year old bitch. I would prefer more length of leg to balance her longish body.. Sweet head and nice dark eye.Good leathers and coat of good texture… Ribs go well back and she moved  well. 3rd:   Reid’s  Maudaxi Pina Colada Parfait

Open Bitch  (6 Entries) Abs: 2 1st: Robertson  & Cadmore’s  Ch Soletrader Cotton Candy . 3 year old of lovely type and size.. Super head and eye. Correct  leathers.   Good shoulders, forechest and ribbing goes well back to strong correctly angulated hindquarters . Good thick tail carried well. Best mover in this class. Reserve CC 2nd:  Foote & Mcaulay’s  Ir Ch Ch Erylan Hera La Reine ShCEx   This  3 year old bitch is very well presented  with a lovely head and correct length of leathers. She is  well made throughout..Her body is of good  length and hindquarters have correct angulation.  Good thick tail which she carries well on the move.  She moved very well and has a good  coat.3rd:  Ch Soletrader Fun Times for Rangali JW
