BOURNEMOUTH CANINE ASSOCIATION CH. SHOW
Judges Critiques
BOURNEMOUTH CANINE ASSOCIATIONMr Colin Richardson
Judging: Rottweiler, Working Group
My most sincere thanks to the Officers and Committee of the Society for inviting me to judge the show especially the exhibitors for allowing me to judge their dogs. I have had a longstanding interest in the breed since the early 80’s. Having watched the Chessara, Poirrot and Potterspride dogs many years ago. The temperature was hot with a short thunderstorm in the middle of the classes , all the dogs behaved impeccably at this lovely venue.
Well done on your endeavours with temperament there was a couple that were nervous, however being 2 metres in height I can sometimes unnerve a dog. Type is still variable both in head shape, coat and outline. Some had incorrect lengths of muzzle (short) which changed the expression to resemble a Bull Mastiff. Mouths need watching as I had two level bites. There were couple of instances with teeth that were crowded, this is normally indicative of insufficient width of jaw. Most tailsets were OK, however, please do keep an eye on the tail set and also the croup.
Movement was a real mixed bag, with some being presented well standing, but disappointing on the move. This breed’s original function was supposed to be able to follow cattle all day at the trot or walk. This required the breed to have stamina and an economical movement. Movement was very varied from the very good powerful drive to some that were close behind and plaiting in front. It does the breed no favours to have a dog look good in profile but in the up and down, front and rear action was poor. There were a number with weak pasterns, some roadwork at the walk can help.
My overall impression was a breed that is in good and caring hands and I commend you all for your efforts. I thought the majority of dogs were well presented, clean and a credit to their owners’ care and attention.
I thought my principal winners were lovely specimens of the breed. I was delighted to see my RBCC after some 6 years. I had given her BIS at the Eastern Cos. Rottweiler Club Show in 2018 and she was looking so well and spry at 9 years of age. Both the BCC and RBCC. although slightly different in type, were excellent examples of the breed.

BOB BCC & 1st Dunhill-Hall Ch Fantasa Lucky Seven. What a lovely bitch, projects strength without coarseness, She commands attention as soon as she comes into the ring. A delight to go over, everything about her screams quality & breed type. Object lesson in how the breed should move. Stands over her legs, I was told many many years ago that if its made right it’ll stand right. In the challenge she was pressed hard by the veteran bitch.
Strong feminine head without coarseness and of correct proportions with medium sized eye correctly shaped and colour. Muscular neck flowing into good forehand, with well ribbed body and plenty of heart room. Scissor bite with large clean teeth, strong underjaw. Well defined musculature on hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Correctly marked with clearly defined markings. Moved well with powerful drive and correct action.
2nd Tuttle’s Laverko Defying Gravity. This bitch was unfortunate to meet the winner of this class, however the winner was outstanding. A very pleasing bitch with feminine head of good proportions. Would have liked a shade more length of muzzle but overall a very nice picture. Powerful neck into excellent fore hand. Loin and rear angulation very good. Moved with drive and purpose.
3rd Clark’s Botlierskop Titan Theia
Veteran (2 0abs)
1st BRCC Horton’s Ch. Juffther Happy Bunny JW ShCM. I make no apologies for reproducing what I said about this bitch 6 years ago as it is still relevant today. A cracking bitch who today had to give way to youth “made my day. Came in as if she owned the ring, and she certainly won this class with something to spare. Stood over her legs. If it’s made right, it’ll stand right. Feminine head of correct proportions. Good skull shape and ear set, with alert expression and good eye shape. Clean neck flowing into correctly placed shoulders. Good depth of brisket, correct topline and tailset. Muscular hindquarters with length of second thigh and low set hocks. Covered the ground effortlessly. Very well presented and a joy to watch.”
2nd Clark’s Botlierskop Scarlet Emerald A very pleasing bitch with feminine head of good proportion overall a very nice picture. Powerful neck into excellent fore hand. Loin and rear angulation very good. Moved with drive and purpose. Unfortunate to meet winner.
